Engaging Students in Community and Enterprise

Information for Teachers

Gill Wright, Head of Business Studies at Brighouse High (a Business and Enterprise school) sums what the Project's all about in an article which appeared in their local newspaper:

"The Project has been a fantastic learning experience for the students. They have had to plan the launch of the campaign, organise the administration of the site, develop their website skills and make decisions about how to effectively promote the site to local organisations and the local community."

The Project is very flexible. You can run it with students from Year 10 upwards, over a range of abilities. It can be run within an existing course, or stand alone. It can be extended to integrate additional learning outcomes. You can even use it to raise income.

Student Cohorts

The Project can be teacher-led (e.g. Yr10 alternative curriculum), through teacher-guided (e.g. L2+ qualification such as BTEC First), or even student-run (e.g. sixth form Enterprise group). During the evaluation period, we recommend you try the Enterprise Quiz with a number of different student cohorts, from Year 10 to Sixth Form, to assess interest and enthusiasm fully. Research shows that the practical nature of the Project is its main strength.

Optional Activities

The Short Enterprise Programme provides the base framework for the Project, as well as a means for running the Project for the first time to get your website up and running quickly.

The Teamwork Programme is an example of how the Short Enterprise Programme can be extended using the “Create the Team”, “Marketing”, “Sales Campaign” and “eBusiness & Security” optional activities.

As you develop more experience you will discover how to integrate other optional activities into your school curriculum.

Running as a Mini-enterprise

It does not matter whether or not you are planning to run the Project along business lines (allocating job roles, project planning, marketing, etc), but it may help the students’ understanding and motivation if you do so. That way, they will gain an insight – however small – into some of the issues which surround the world of work.

It is your decision whether you wish to raise funds by charging businesses for being listed in the directory. Alternatively, you may prefer to use it as a “thank you” to the local businesses who provide work experience. Asking for donations is another option. All of these have proved successful, although the free service is recommended when doing the Short Enterprise Programme.
