Engaging Students in Community and Enterprise

The LocalBiz Project

The LocalBiz Project can be purchased using eLearning Credits

The LocalBiz Project is a flexible collection of Enterprise and Work-related Learning activities, which engage the students in the running of a community website. You can take a look at examples of actual school websites or review ‘Demotown’ a community website showing a mix of News, Events and local Business listings that a school’s community website could feature.

The activites have been combined in different ways to form a collection of Programmes, each of which delivers its own set of specific learning outcomes. Find out how with our Free Evaluation. The Project supports your Enterprise Journey, covering many elements of Community, Citizenship, Work-related Learning, and Enterprise ... as well as being fun for those involved. Suitable for KS2, KS3, KS4. Very suitable for a mix of ages, abilities, and schools.

NEW - The Whole School Programme: Involve as many students as you like from as many year groups as you like. "One School - One Project" truly embeds a real Enterprise activity into the school culture. "Embedding Enterprise" summarises how you can get started on this journey.
Make Your Mark - enterprise Week 2006The Enterprise Day Programme runs during a collapsed timetable, typically seen when you hold an "Enterprise Day". A great way to launch your LocalBiz Community website! Involve local business people, and create in a day a website to last a lifetime. Brilliant with teams comprising different year groups. Ideal for Enterprise Week.
NEW - The Primary School Programme: 10 hours (min) as an extra-curricula activity, introducing Community and Enterprise to Key Stage 2. Can be run as a linked secondary/feeder school activity.
The ICT Programme takes 15 to 20 hours, and could be completed in a single term at 2 hours per week. The ICT Key Skill qualification has an examination, and an optional portfolio of evidence. The full accredited qualification is also worth a points-equivalence of ¾ GCSE (and 10 UCAS points at level 2). This programme provides the practical experience which helps to reinforce the knowledge required for the examination, and - as with Teamwork - the workbook provides the portfolio of evidence to gain the full qualification.
The Teamwork Programme takes between 20 and 30 hours, and can therefore be completed in an academic year at only 1 hour per week. It generates the evidence required for the "Working With Others" Key Skill, worth points equivalent to ¾ GCSE (and 10 UCAS points at level 2). This accredited qualification can be obtained from all of the major examination boards, and is non-examinable. Students must demonstrate through a portfolio of work that they have both the required knowledge for working with other people, and the ability to put that knowledge into practice. The student workbook which accompanies this programme is designed to provide that evidence.

Customised Programmes - All of our programmes can be amended to bring in (or omit) particular learning outcomes, depending on what is required. This could be to cover the other Key Skill qualifications, specific requirements, or courses, such as DIDA and other Diplomas. It can also be linked to Work Experience. Contact us for further discussion on how The LocalBiz Project can benefit your students, your school, and the community it serves.
The Short Enterprise Programme takes between 8 to 12 hours to complete. It can be run in as a focused programme in as little as 3 days, or over a complete term, at one hour per week, perhaps as an extra-curricula activity.

Contact us by email or phone 01943 434343 for further information about any of the above programmes, or take this opportunity to undertake a free evaluation of the Project.

ALL STUDENTS FROM KS2 UPWARDS CAN BENEFIT

The Project is designed to support Enterprise learning from Year 5 upwards, covering a wide range of student abilities and motivations. Contact us to discuss your school's requirements, or review our on-line case studies for further details.

The LocalBiz Project forms the heart of a Nationwide development of community based websites and local business directories. Each one contains details about local businesses operating in that community, plus lots of other useful information. The Project gives young people an opportunity to build, for themselves, a more vibrant and prosperous community. Penistone LocalBiz is an example of one community website managed by students.
