The LocalBiz Project’s aim is to have low-cost business services directories covering the whole of the UK. Clearly, there needs to be a way for a member of the public to find “their” community’s LocalBiz Directory. First, some terminology about postcodes. The first part of a postcode is known as the “outbound” code. It is split into area and district. For example, LS29 8SA has an outbound code of LS29, where LS is the area and 29 the district. The second part of the postcode is the "inbound" code. However, we do not need to use that - we will concern ourselves purely with the outbound code. You can allocate one "outbound" code as the primary postcode area covered by your website. For example, it may be the first part of the postcide for your school. You can then add as many secondary postcodes as you like (normally those surrounding your primary code). When a person enters a postcode (such as LS29), they will be returned a list of all LocalBiz Directories in their locality (i.e. those with this postcode assigned as primary), followed by a list of those in surrounding areas (i.e. those having the postcode in their secondary list). If none is found from this search, or the person enters only the “area” part of the postcode (e.g. LS), then they wil be presented with a list of all LocalBiz Directories which match the area portion of the postcode. You can see the postcode search facility in the top right hand corner of this page. |
